Dear colleagues,

2020 was an unusual year for everybody. We hope that everyone stayed safe and healthy and that this new year will bring you all the best! At RVO, we have certainly missed being able to meet in person and hear from you all. This new year gives us a lot to look forward to. The first LAND-at-scale projects will take off, our knowledge management activities will commence, and we look forward to participating in events and conferences again.

In this second quarterly newsletter, we are pleased to present to you the first LAND-at-scale project in Zimbabwe that has commenced. More projects will follow in the coming months.

If you have any questions or remarks about LAND-at-scale, please do not hesitate to reach out to us through landatscale@rvo.nl.

FAO-RVO Roundtable on Land Consolidation in the Arab region
RVO’s LAND-at-scale team and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) will jointly organize a Round Table on opportunities and challenges for participatory land consolidation in the Arab Region. Building on extensive experiences in Central and Eastern Europe, and hearing from experts from several countries in the Middle East and North Africa Region, this Roundtable serves as an agenda setting event – exploring current policies and practices with land consolidation in the region. For LAND-at-scale, this Round Table serves as direct inspiration and input for a new LAND-at-scale intervention in Egypt.

In many parts of the world, participatory land consolidation has been put forward as an effective land management tool that can address issues related to land fragmentation, and the efficient use of limited water resources. Land consolidation, moreover, offers concrete tools for participatory land use planning and can facilitate a more transparent and fair distribution of land access while supporting inclusive decision making at community level. Lastly, land consolidation can play an important role in more sustainable use of natural resources and supporting climate change adaptation and mitigation approaches.

In this Round Table, to be organized at the 2nd Arab Land Conference (Cairo, 22-24 February 2021), concrete cases of land consolidation in the region will be presented and discussed. Topics include the objectives of land consolidation, different types of land consolidation, gender aspects, and opportunities for climate change mitigation and adaptation.
For updates on this roundtable, keep an eye on our LinkedIn page, see here and at the Arab Land Conference official website, here.
